In this month of May, coaching takes center stage! This year, the ICF Converge Summit welcomes professional coaches to Paris for 3 days of continuous learning. It's also a time for me to step back, listen, learn alongside my peers, and make inspiring connections! <\/td><\/tr>
This month, I want to take you behind the scenes of coaching: what really happens in a coaching conversation. And why, as a leader, your own coaching posture matters.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A professional coach acts as a partner to help individuals or groups achieve specific goals and improve their performance. They don't offer advice or tell people what to do, but rather facilitate the client's own self-discovery and problem-solving.\n\nHere's a breakdown of what a professional coach typically does:\n\n* **Listens Actively:** Coaches are trained to listen deeply, paying attention not only to what is said but also to what is unsaid, including body language and tone.\n* **Asks Powerful Questions:** They use open-ended questions to prompt reflection, challenge assumptions, and help clients gain new perspectives. These questions are designed to encourage the client to think critically and come up with their own solutions.\n* **Identifies Goals and Desired Outcomes:** Coaches work with clients to clearly define what they want to achieve, ensuring the goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.\n* **Facilitates Self-Discovery:** Through questioning and active listening, coaches help clients uncover their strengths, values, beliefs, and potential obstacles.\n* **Promotes Accountability:** Coaches help clients establish action plans and hold them accountable for taking the necessary steps to reach their goals. They provide encouragement and support but also help clients acknowledge when they've veered off track.\n* **Supports Growth and Development:** Coaches create a safe and supportive environment where clients can experiment, take risks, learn from mistakes, and develop new skills or behaviors.\n* **Provides Perspective and a Sounding Board:** They offer an objective viewpoint, helping clients see situations from different angles and consider new possibilities. Clients can use coaches as a confidential sounding board for their ideas and concerns.\n* **Focuses on the Future:** While acknowledging the past, coaches primarily focus on what the client wants to create in the future.\n* **Empowers the Client:** The core of coaching is empowering the client to find their own answers and take ownership of their journey. The coach believes the client has the capacity to find their own solutions.\n\nProfessional coaches work in various areas, including:\n\n* **Executive Coaching:** Helping leaders improve their effectiveness, management skills, and strategic thinking.\n* **Leadership Coaching:** Developing emerging and established leaders.\n* **Career Coaching:** Assisting individuals with career transitions, job searches, and professional development.\n* **Life Coaching:** Supporting individuals in achieving personal goals related to health, relationships, well-being, and overall life satisfaction.\n* **Team Coaching:** Improving collaboration, communication, and performance within teams.\n* **Health and Wellness Coaching:** Guiding individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles and manage chronic conditions.\n\nIn essence, a professional coach is a catalyst for positive change, helping individuals unlock their potential and achieve what they set out to do.<\/span><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Those of you who have benefitted from professional coaching know its benefits. It is a structured process grounded in listening, trust, and a strong alliance, and a space for reflection, perspective, and growth. It\u2019s a partnership where the coachee, supported by their coach, explores what needs to emerge, shift, or transform.\u00a0\u00a0

A professional coach is here to create the conditions for real thinking and meaningful change. Not to give answers, but to help you find your own.\u00a0

Concretely, a coach helps you:\u00a0
\u2013 clarify what\u2019s really at stake\u00a0
\u2013 take a step back and view situations with a fresh perspective\u00a0
\u2013 identify your internal and external resources\u00a0
\u2013 explore your actual levers for action\u00a0
\u2013 move forward towards change \u2013 consciously chosen, not imposed\u00a0

The role is to build your autonomy, clarity, and sense of responsibility.\u00a0

The coach offers you a space that is both safe and challenging. A space where you can think freely and move forward with intention. A space where listening, empathy, and care are at the heart of the relationship.\u00a0
What makes coaching truly effective is the balance between:\u00a0quality of presence<\/strong>(deep listening, trust, attention) and\u00a0structural integrity<\/strong>\u00a0(a clear framework, strong ethics, and strict confidentiality).

While the ICF deontology and core competencies guide my practice, I also seek inspiration from The Center for Creative Leadership. In one of their most recent articles on coaching, they highlight several key focus areas in executive coaching that drive meaningful outcomes, reinforcing the depth and impact of this work.<\/td><\/tr>
